This week, I’ve been assigned to write about “The Ghost Trap,” a film scheduled to open Wednesday July 17, at the 27th Maine International Film Festival in Waterville.
It is based on the novel of the same name, by K. Stephens, and was directed by James Khanlarian, in his directorial debut. To this reviewer, Khanlarian, a young fellow, knows and loves what he’s doing. It always helps.
“The Ghost Trap” is engaging, professional and easy on the eyes. Treat it with respect.

…If you’re going into the film industry, film school is completely overrated. You’re not going to learn a whole lot in film school that’s really germane to the film industry. Yes, you can learn about focus. You can watch the classic movies. You can learn about the camera. You can learn a little bit about lighting. But even the lighting techniques they taught me, at least in film school, weren’t very useful. You’ll learn more being on set two days with a real director of photography than your entire film school career. Film school is nothing compared to real life experience…

Interview with producer of Khanlarian Entertainment, Peter Couture
…It’s incredibly rewarding. Every time I watch the film or revisit the script, I feel immensely proud that we were able to do the book justice. Honestly, it’s one of the most exciting and fun things I’ve ever done. One thing I hadn’t anticipated was how much my project management skills would come into play, managing the multiple moving parts of filmmaking. It’s really neat. Now that this project is ready to go, I’m eager to start on the next one and experience this process again. I can see why people choose to do this for a living; it’s absolutely addicting. Maybe it’s because I’m new to it, but the thrill is undeniable.
